How Do You Make A Resume

Virtually every job requires that you hand in a resume. Unless you come from a very wealthy family or got lucky in the lottery, you will need to know how to write a resume, sooner or later. But how do you make a resume?

There are probably millions of sites online that will tell how to make a resume but ultimately, it all boils down to one thing. And that is, can do you the job? If you can somehow structure your resume in such a way that the employer or recruiter can read exactly what they want to know, then this will increase your odds of getting that coveted interview. Of course, no expects you be a psychic and be able to read someone else’s mind (and from a large distance as well!) but there are certain keywords and key phrases that you aim to highlight in your resume.

What To Write On a CV

There are certain things you should and should not include in your CV or Curriculum Vitae. As you would know, a CV is a more formalized and extended version of a resume. In some countries, a CV is considered to be the same as a resume. However, in some other countries, like the US and Canada (and perhaps in Europe), a CV is different to a resume, as it should be.

So  how to write a CV for a job? You should obviously include all details relevant to the job at hand, such as academic qualifications, relevant work experience as well as any publications, fellowships, awards and the like.

The Worst Cover Letter Ever And How To Avoid It

It sounds odd that I should tell you how to write a compelling first and then tell you about the worst cover letter in the world. But believe me, this is something that might make your day. The cover letter was written by a guy named Mark, a NYU junior who’s trying to get a summer position at J.P. Morgan. This is his cover letter:

Dear Sir or Madame:

I am an ambitious undergraduate at NYU triple majoring in Mathematics, Economics, and Computer Science. I am a punctual, personable, and shrewd individual, yet I have a quality which I pride myself on more than any of these.

How To Write A Compelling Cover Letter

I’ve probably wrote this a number of times already but some candidates still don’t know how to write a cover that recruiters actually want to read. The trick is to write a cover letter that isn’t generic, like:

 

Dear [employer],

I would like to express my interest in [some position] at [company]. Although I’ve explored many options … [fluff, fluff, hard-working, fluff] … I believe that my 4 years of experience at [some company I got fired from or quit from] will serve you well. I look forward to hearing from you and what [company] has to offer.
